About
A frame is a structure that sets its subject apart and invites us to look at it. A single frame shows only a limited scene, but when frames overlap, a broader view emerges that none of them could reveal on its own.
In this exhibition, each person is presented as a single frame. Within our own frame, we are the subjects of our own lives, and others exist as the background. In another person's frame, that person becomes the subject, and we become their background. This shift in position takes us beyond recognizing ourselves as the subjects of our lives. It brings us face to face with the fact that others, too, are subjects living lives of their own.
16P1 expresses this relationship through a single symbol. It borrows the notation for a permutation that selects one of sixteen participants, and so regards each participant as an independent subject. Placed side by side in the same space, they intersect and form a multilayered composition. 16P1 seeks to present a scene painted together by sixteen subjects who became one another's backgrounds.
