Breathing space
2026 Porcelain slip, Glaze(Rutile blue, Yeondu cheongha, Lavender stone) varies by work
The water spider gathers air bubbles underwater to create its own air chamber, where it breathes and lives. Its ability to create the space it needs and sustain its life within an unfamiliar environment led me to reflect on the meaning of having “time for oneself.” Modern life often makes it difficult to step away from the gaze of others and its constant pace, leaving little time to focus on oneself. I believe everyone needs moments to step away from their surroundings, reflect on their own state, and catch their breath. The ritual of enjoying tea and dessert offers one way to create such personal time. Preparing tea, drinking it slowly, and savoring dessert becomes more than simply eating and drinking; it is a moment to step away from the complexities of everyday life, reconnect with oneself, and regain energy. This work translates these thoughts into the concept of the “Room of Breath,” drawing a parallel between the water spider’s habitat and the ritual of tea. Just as the water spider’s air chamber provides a space for survival underwater, the Room of Breath becomes a space to pause within everyday life and rediscover one’s own rhythm and breath. The teapots, teacups, dessert bowls, and plates are individual objects, yet when placed and used together, they form a single “Room of Breath.” The process of brewing tea, serving dessert, and slowly savoring each moment becomes a small ritual through which the user creates a space of their own, pauses to catch their breath, and returns to themselves.
