2026 Paper clay, Ceramic paint varies by work

This object portrays the everyday lives of demons who continue to live in much the same way as they did in the human world, even after death. By combining surreal physical features such as horns, wings, and tails with human-like facial expressions, postures, and clothing, I sought to depict beings that exist on the boundary between the human and the non-human. Rather than placing each figure in a dramatic event or extraordinary scene, I have portrayed them engaging in ordinary postures and actions, focusing on the idea that reincarnated demons are also beings living out a life of their own. Objects such as chairs and boxes that appear alongside the figures are marked with urban graffiti and traces of everyday use, allowing these surreal beings to exist naturally within familiar, realistic spaces. By placing familiar elements of everyday life alongside unreal creatures within the same scene, I sought to create an atmosphere in which the boundary between reality and fiction becomes blurred. For those who imagine the afterlife as something optimistic or grandly fantastical, I would like to leave them with a simple thought: even after death, things are still the same—or perhaps, it is simply the end.
