The crew, Me

2026 Mixed clay body varies by work

“Too many crew, and the boat sails up a mountain” carries a negative view: when many people gather, they get swept along in the wrong direction. This work turns the saying around and begins from a possibility: “Even with many crew, the boat can reach the sea.” The sea here is not a successful ending. It means keeping oneself as one is, even when together with others. The crew in this work are just that. Their shape comes from the way my friends and I stood leaning against one another. Rather than depicting the human body realistically, I reduced that posture to simple masses, making forms that can stand on their own. To stand is a state. Whether leaning on someone or standing alone, the fact of standing does not change. Gathered or scattered, the crew stay as they are, each holding their own place. That is what the sea means to me.
