Threshold
2026 Porcelain slip, Ceramic pigment varies by work
Excitement and anxiety are distinct states, yet they share similar physiological responses. As the senses sharpen and energy builds within the body, these similar responses may give rise to excitement or develop into anxiety. Threshold explores the moment before this heightened state resolves into one or the other. Through repeated shaping, clay is formed into sharp, spiked protrusions that radiate outward from a central point, densely covering the surface. As the spikes multiply and extend in all directions, the surface evokes the tension suspended between excitement and anxiety. The work captures this moment of indeterminacy—the fleeting instant before the body’s heightened state takes one direction or another—and gives it lasting form.
